This post is not here to convince you of anything. It is here to help you find your own answer , because when you know your why, everything else becomes clearer and you can start creating your own map.
The questions that help you find your way
Before we talk about the benefits of bilingualism, and there are many, let’s start with you.
Ask yourself these questions and sit with the answers:
1. Is Spanish part of your family story?
Is there a grandparent, a partner, a culture, a country that speaks Spanish? Does your child have family they cannot fully communicate with yet? Is there a part of your heritage you want to keep alive?
If yes, you already know your why. Spanish is not just a language for your family. It is a thread that connects generations. A way of saying you belong to this too.
2. Did you learn Spanish or wish you had?
Did you study Spanish and fall in love with it? Do you wish you had started earlier? Do you want your child to have what took you years to build or what you never quite got to?
If yes, you are giving your child a head start you chose for them with love. Not because it is expected. Because you know what it feels like to want it.
3. Do you believe in the power of other cultures?
Do you love to travel? Do you believe that seeing the world through another language changes how you see everything? Do you want your child to grow up curious, open and connected to something bigger than their immediate world?
If yes, Spanish is your door. To music, food, literature, art, people and places that will enrich your child’s life in ways you cannot yet imagine.
4. Do you simply want the best for your child’s developing brain?
Have you read about the benefits of bilingualism? Have you heard that the earlier the better? Are you here because something in you says now is the time , even if you are not sure exactly why?
If yes, trust that instinct. Because science agrees with you.
What the research tells us
Once you have found your why, here is what science adds to it.
Children under 5 are in the most extraordinary window of language acquisition that will ever exist in their lives. During these years the brain is literally wired to absorb language , not through study, not through pressure, but through play, music, emotion and connection.
This is not opinion. This is neuroscience.
A child who is exposed to a second language before the age of 5:
1. Develops stronger cognitive flexibility, the ability to think in multiple ways and switch between tasks
2. Builds greater empathy and cultural awareness
3. Has a larger working memory and stronger problem solving skills
4. Acquires the second language with near-native pronunciation and natural fluency
5. Develops stronger literacy skills in BOTH languages
And perhaps most beautifully of all, they grow up with a wider sense of who they are and where they belong in the world.
And if my child is already over 5?
The science is clear, earlier is easier. But later is still extraordinary. Language learning at any age builds confidence, connection and a wider sense of the world.

Here is what we have learned from the families we work with at Dímelon:
For heritage families — Spanish is identity. It is the language of abuela, of summers in another country, of phone calls that used to feel frustrating and now feel like home. When a child can speak Spanish with their family all the pieces connect.
For families learning together — Spanish is an adventure. A parent who is not fluent but shows up every week, sings the songs at home, tries the words at bath time — that parent is teaching their child something even more powerful than vocabulary. You don’t need to have it all figured out
One of the most common things I hear from parents before they join Dímelon is:
“I’m not sure if I’m doing enough.”
“I don’t speak Spanish myself — is that okay?”
“She’s already 4 — have we missed the window?”
“I want to be more consistent but I don’t know how.”
Here is what I want to say to every single one of those parents:
You haven’t missed anything. You are not doing it wrong. You don’t need to be fluent. You just need to start.
Your why doesn’t need to be perfect. It doesn’t need to be academic or researched or fully formed. It just needs to be yours.
